Got work to do, so let's get loud!

One of the things I love about writing is the research. Some of it will never be used again – I doubt I’ll ever need to know how fast a yacht can cross the Mediterranean. Some of it remains interesting; if I visit Las Vegas I will definitely be checking out the casinos. And some of it becomes a major fascination.

In my case, surprisingly, I have now become an avid follower of NFL.

So much so, in fact, that a couple of weeks ago my husband and I travelled down to London to see the Chicago Bears play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium.

Can I just say that the US has the right idea when it comes to sports games. I’ve been to football matches over here before and done little more than sit and shiver. At Wembley I found myself holding up pieces of paper to make a flag design during the national anthem, watching cheerleaders during stoppage time and getting caught up in a very enthusiastic Mexican wave which circled the ground at least six times. Not to mention the big screen which, in between video clips of player interviews, replays and bloopers, would randomly put up messages such as “Wave Your Flag!” or “Get Loud!” I’ve never had so much fun at a game in my life.

So that was my way of blowing out the cobwebs. I’m doing NaNoWriMo this month to finish off my next novel – wish me luck!
